Our Premium Dirt Material Selection
List of Services
-
Fill Dirt DeliveryList Item 1
Perfect for: House pads, leveling yards, filling low spots, and raising elevation.
Fill dirt is the backbone of construction in Louisiana. Because our area is prone to heavy rain and high water tables, having a solid foundation is non-negotiable. Our fill dirt is a subsoil, typically consisting of clay, which allows for heavy compaction. This makes it the ideal material for building up the ground before pouring concrete.
General Fill: The most economical choice for filling in large holes, old swimming pools, or leveling out a backyard that holds too much water.
-
Topsoil and Garden Soil MixesList Item 2
Perfect for: Flower beds, vegetable gardens, laying sod, and surface grading.
Unlike fill dirt, topsoil is nutrient-rich and designed to hold moisture while allowing plant roots to breathe. If you are starting a new landscaping project in Covington, you need soil that promotes growth.
Screened Topsoil: We offer topsoil that has been screened to remove large rocks, sticks, and clumps. This ensures a smooth, easy-to-rake finish perfect for laying new sod or seeding grass.
-
Sand Delivery (River Sand & Mason Sand)List Item 3
Perfect for: Masonry, swimming pool installation, pavers, and playgrounds.
Sand is one of the most versatile materials we haul. In Covington and Mandeville, sand is frequently used for drainage projects and under-slab preparation.
River Sand (Pump Sand): This is commonly used as a bedding material for pipes, under concrete slabs, or for leveling uneven lawns (top dressing) because it washes into the grass easily without smothering it.
Residential And Commercial Dirt Delivery Services
For Homeowners
We know that ordering a dump truck can be intimidating if you’ve never done it before. Will the truck crack my driveway? Will they dump it in the right spot?
- Property Protection: Our drivers are trained to navigate residential neighborhoods in Covington, utilizing spotters and caution to avoid power lines and mailboxes.
- Tailgating/Spreading: Whenever safe and possible, our drivers can "tailgate" the load (spreading the material as they drive forward) to minimize the manual labor you have to do with a shovel and rake.
For Contractors
You need a reliable hauling partner who shows up when they say they will.
- Volume Hauling: We can coordinate multiple trucks for continuous hauling on large grading projects.
- Site Management: We understand job site safety and logistics. We get in, dump safely, and get out so your operators can keep working.
How to Estimate Your Material Needs (Cubic Yard Calculator)
One of the most common questions we hear is, “How much dirt do I actually need?” Getting this right is important because ordering too little can delay your project, while ordering too much can leave you with excess material. Dirt, sand, and gravel are sold by the cubic yard, which can be hard to picture at first. To visualize it, imagine a box that is three feet wide, three feet long, and three feet high. That volume equals one cubic yard of material, which typically weighs between 2,000 and 3,000 pounds depending on moisture and material type.
The Formula: (Length in feet) x (Width in feet) x (Depth in feet) ÷ 27 = Cubic Yards Needed
Example: You want to fill a flower bed that is 10 feet long, 4 feet wide, and 6 inches (0.5 feet) deep.
- 10 x 4 x 0.5 = 20
- 20 ÷ 27 = 0.74 Cubic Yards.
In this scenario, a pickup truck load might suffice, but if you have multiple beds, a small dump truck delivery is much more efficient.
For larger projects, it helps to understand truck capacities. A standard tandem dump truck typically carries around 12 to 14 cubic yards of dirt or sand, while a single axle truck usually holds about 5 to 6 cubic yards and is often better suited for tight residential driveways or limited access areas. Yard leveling projects often require several cubic yards, while driveways, pads, and grading jobs can quickly add up to 10 yards or more.
As a general rule, it’s always smart to order about 10% more dirt than your calculations show. This extra material accounts for settling, compaction, and uneven ground, which are common on most properties. Having a little extra on hand is far better than running short and needing an additional delivery. If you’re ever unsure about how much dirt to order, our team is happy to help you estimate the right amount for your project and ensure you get exactly what you need.

How to Get Your Site Ready for a Dirt Delivery
So, you’ve placed your order with Covington Dirt Delivery, the truck is scheduled, and you’re ready to transform your property. However, before the driver pulls into your driveway, taking a few critical steps will ensure a smooth, safe, and efficient delivery. Heavy dump trucks and the soft, often damp soil of Southern Louisiana don't always mix well without a plan, so a little bit of preparation goes a long way in preventing headaches and property damage.
The first step in a successful delivery is choosing and clearly marking your drop zone. You should never leave a driver guessing where the material needs to go, as moving a massive pile of dirt by hand after it has been dumped is an exhausting task. Use wooden stakes, traffic cones, or bright landscape chalk to mark the exact corners of your desired location. While choosing this spot, remember to look up; a standard tandem dump truck requires at least 15 to 20 feet of vertical clearance to fully raise its bed, meaning low-hanging power lines or tree branches can pose a significant safety hazard.
You should focus on site logistics and safety on the day of the delivery. Make sure the path is completely clear by moving personal vehicles out of the driveway and away from the street directly in front of your home. If you have a gated property, verify that the opening is at least 10 to 12 feet wide to allow the truck enough room to maneuver. For the safety of your family, please keep children and pets indoors while the truck is in motion, as these large vehicles have significant blind spots. Once the material is on the ground, having a large tarp ready is a smart move; it prevents a sudden Louisiana rainstorm from turning your fresh fill dirt into a muddy mess or washing it into the street. With these steps completed, your project will be off to a professional and organized start.

Can you dump the dirt exactly where I want it?
We will make every effort to dump the material in your preferred spot, provided it is safe for our truck. Factors like low hanging trees, soft ground, or septic tanks may limit where a heavy truck can go. The driver has the final say for safety reasons.
What is the difference between fill dirt and topsoil?
Fill dirt is for structure and volume; it has clay and packs down hard. Topsoil is for planting; it is loose, organic, and holds water for roots. Do not use topsoil to build a house pad, and do not use fill dirt to grow flowers!
Do you deliver when it’s raining?
Delivery feasibility depends on the material. Gravel can be delivered in almost any weather. However, dirt and topsoil become very heavy and muddy when wet. We usually recommend waiting for dry weather to ensure the truck doesn't get stuck on your property and the material is workable.
How much notice do you need for a delivery?
We recommend calling 24 to 48 hours in advance, especially during the busy spring season. However, we often have slots open for same-day delivery.
